Birmingham prior to the coming of the railway, was at the hub of the canal network. Much of that past has been faithfully preserved, albeit now juxtaposed with modern architecture, a fascinating combination. Today the canals almost encircle the city centre with walkways that include Gas Street Basin, Brindleyplace and The Cube.
