The county boundary has had a chequered history, which until recently was part of Dyfed, an administrative county formed 1 April 1974. Its eastern end, The Black Mountains, form part of the Brecon Beacons National Park, otherwise it is sylvan and lush, particularly around the Afon Tywi, which enters the Bristol Channel south of Carmarthen.
