West Midlands county was annexed from Warwickshire in 1974 and includes the Birmingham conurbation, Wolverhampton and Coventry. Originally a tiny Anglo-Saxon farming village, Birmingham has grown into England's second city and most of the designated county area is built-up and takes in Walsall, Dudley, Solihull and Sutton Coldfield.
